Description

Angus Young – 1970 Gibson SG – Sold

About The Guitar

As with all my guitar sculptures, I start by transferring my scale drawing onto a wood base, making sure to accurately mark out all the features of the guitar; pickups, volume & tone knobs, jack plugs, bridges, fret position, headstock features etc.

From there I usually start by laying out the outline of the body shape using an appropriate material that best fits the guitar characteristics. For the Gibson SG I used heavy-duty motorcycle chain to shape the body and headstock.

The Gibson SG was the first sculpture I attempted in this series of guitars for exhibitions. It took over 90 hours to create and contains parts from motorcycles, bicycles, outboard engines and cars.

The guitar sculpture also comes with its own unique guitar stand. This is specifically tailored to the needs of the guitar with respects to its look, balance and body shape.

About The Artist

Angus McKinnon Young (March 31, 1955)

Originally immigrants from Glasgow, Scotland, the Young family settled in Sydney in 1965.

Angus and his older brother Malcolm, formed AC/DC in 1973. They decided on the name of the band from seeing it on the back of their sister’s sewing machine. Furthermore, that same sewing machine was used by Angus’s sister to create his trade-mark schoolboy uniform.

Bon Scott, lead singer of AC/DC, died from alcohol poisoning in 1980. Later that year, AC/DC released their tenth studio album “Back In Black” with newly recruited singer Brian Johnson. “Back In Black” was a tribute to Bon Scott and remains the second highest selling album of all time.

AC/DC were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2003.

MTV rank them as the seventh “Greatest heavy metal band of all time”.

Australian Guitar Magazine named Angus “Best Australian Guitarist of All Time”.

Equipment Used

Angus has used Gibson guitars throughout his career, notably the Gibson SG series. The Gibson Guitar Corporation have collaborated to make a personal Angus Young SG guitar. It has a pick-up designed by himself and the AC/DC trademark “lightning bolt” inlays in the fretboard.

Interesting fact: Angus’s eldest brother, George, was the rhythm guitarist for the Australian band, The Easybeats.

Furthermore, guitarists that also made the Gibson SG their guitar of choice include:

Tony Iommi – Black Sabbath

Carlos Santana – Santana

Robby Krieger – The Doors

Jerry Garcia – The Grateful Dead

Frank Zappa – Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention

Pete Townshend – The Who

Quotes from Angus:

“I’ve got the blues in my heart, and the devil in my fingers” – Angus Young

“My part in AC/DC is just adding the colour on top” – Angus Young

“I just go where the guitar takes me” – Angus Young

Jennifer McNamara-Furlong painted the Angus canvas featured in the images (not included in purchase). You can check out her other artwork here.
